Waste
receiving and handling
Ships produce considerable amounts of waste. Many shipping lines have
growing interest in waste sorting, but varying waste treatment practices
at ports complicate sorting on the ships. One purpose of the New Hansa
of Sustainable Ports and Cities project is to harmonise waste management
practices in the Baltic Sea region ports in order to make sorting easier
and more worthy for shipping lines.
Basic data on the ship-generated solid and oily wastes and their management
will be collected from all participating ports. They are asked to inform
on sorting of different waste fractions (domestic, paper, metal and
hazardous waste), reception facilities at ports, transport and further
treatment of waste.
| “
Swedish harbours are obligated to receive all waste from the ships.
Regarding the costs, the Port of Malmö includes a waste handling
fee for each vessel (0,25 SEK per gross tonnage) in the compulsory
port fee. Ships that sort their waste before depositing it get
a reduced fee. There is thus an incentive to become more active
concerning waste handling on-board.” says Jenny Wickström,
Environmental Supervisor from the City of Malmö. |
The best practices
developed for management of ship-generated
wastes
will be made available for exchange and dissemination. At the same time
relevant national and international legislation will
be analysed. The possible common solutions and good practices on waste
management will then be discussed and agreed upon.
