During the New Hansa project, common guidelines for three concrete practices – prevention of ships’ emissions to the air, receiving and handling waste from the ships and management of waste waters – were created (Memorandum of Understanding on Sustainable Ports and Maritime Policy in the Baltic Sea Region).

The first phase of the project was information gathering and analysis. Information on ships’ emissions to the air, waste treatment and waste water management was collected from all participating ports by the University of Turku, Centre for Maritime Studies in Pori, Finland.

A dialogue between participating ports, cities, shipping lines and other stakeholders followed in order to identify possible common solutions and good practices to build on. Good practices found were agreed upon and formulated into common recommendations to improve and harmonise emission prevention practices, waste treatment and waste water management step-by-step in all Baltic ports.

Results, practices and experiences from ports and cities were discussed in a number of joint workshops. During the project, three newsletters were published for the dissemination of the results.
